Where can I find …more genealogy info ?
Most of the info in this site was obtained through on site collections
ie: going to the library and or buying old books. However, a fair amount
can be obtained from two or three paid subscription sites like genealogy.com
or ancestry.com both of which you pay to access certain parts of
their records... it seems like they have a fee for every different area
so you wind up paying about $100 or more to gain access to all they have
to offer.. which when looked at closely are really just certain specific
years etc for many reocrds so be careful to review what records they will
search before you buy into it. That being said I did manage to get good
success using the trial offer on line access for $10 at genealogy.com,
however, I was fortunate that I was looking for Halsey namesakes as it
seemed to be the dominant one. I searched for others but was rather unsucessful...
but it was worth the $10... you just have to cancel before 7 days to get
your credit card refunded. Which mine was.
Another way is to start spending time on public bulletin boards for
genealogy.. many of the same kind of people seem to always be looking for
more stuff but it is an avenue.
I think perhaps a good staart would be to go to the familyhistory.com
site for the LDS church, they have a big record database...I was pretty
successful with dates and places of birth for ancestors.
The social security death index is good but you really have to spend
the five dollars to get more complete info from them on each person like
parents names etc..but if all you have is a name then it may pay off..the
downside is on line they can only give you first and last so after you
send for the record you can see the middle name etc and check if its the
one your looking for.
The FOIA Freedom of Information Act allows you limited information
and access to many records with various agencies. When enquiring you just
need to request access exercising the FOIA. Especially military records
etc.
Lastly, you can email me to access my own records.. some of which are
on the site. c.garrison@saipan.com
