Marianas Cablevision Secret

This is Captain Unbeatable, a marketing creation of my friend Greg. The Cap came about when MCV and Saipan Cable were locked in fierce competition for the islands cable customers and we were looking for new ways to attract customers away from the competition.

OL' Cap here was our super hero, a guy that was supposed to save the masses by replacing rotten cable service with MCV. The implication of course was that our service was awesome and the competitions was well- not quite up the the Cap's standards.

What began as a clever little campaign, got even funnier when we heard what the competition was saying about it. Dave O'Brien, a guy that would later become a member of the MCV team, was working as SCTV's sales and marketing manger at the time. He and Greg were already pretty good friends, and in their conversations about it he referred to the guy on the left as Captain Unbelievable.

As kind of a slap at O'Brien, one of Greg's football ads had Cap running through a bunch of beefy defenders holding a T.V. like a football. One of the guys getting knocked on his butt was an obviously inept player with the name O'Brien on the back of his jersey. Silly yes, but in the heat of competition, we thought it was hilarious.

OL' Cap eventually got shelved, after one of the more unimaginative members of the MCV management team decided MCV Saipan's Unbeatable campaign should be scrapped in favor of MCV Guam's More to See on MCV campaign. For what it's worth, I prefer the Cap.

Here's the Cap busting through the newspaper, to crush the competition. Macho, vengeful, and irrational, that's what I'm looking for in a spokesman. Are you with me?
