The CNMI Department of Public Safety was created in Title 1, Division 2; chapter 10 of the Commonwealth Code.
The CNMI Department of Public Safety is tasked with the following duties:
- To provide effective police protection to inhabitants of the Commonwealth;
- To provide effective fire protection to persons and property in the Commonwealth;
- To manage facilities for persons accused of crimes pending trial and to provide correctional training for the rehabilitation of those persons sentenced to prison;
- To enforce traffic laws and regulations;
- To safeguard public property and buildings, public officials, and to keep the peace at public ceremonies and official meetings;
- To inspect motor vehicles and enforce motor vehicle registration laws;
- To provide for a civil defense of the Commonwealth;
- To report the presence of dead animals on public property;
- To establish and participate in training and educational programs relating to criminal justice, crime prevention, fire prevention and other related matters;
- To assist the courts in service of process, unless otherwise provided by law.
Each division within the department is tasked with specific mission to ensure that duties and responsibilities as mandated by law are carried out. By distributing responsibilities to specific divisions or offices, the imposes responsibility to respective divisions and offices on they specific service that must be delivered. In every responsibility, we must ensure that we are mindful of the type of service to be delivered and the quality of that service.
